Earth Observation Open Science 2.0

Sinergise will participate in an innovative Earth Observation (EO) scientific exploitation programme – referred as Earth Observation Open Science 2.0, which will be prepared by The European Space Agency (ESA) to maximize the scientific benefits of Earth Observation (EO) data by capitalizing on the digital revolution.

In this context, ESA is organizing a community consultation meeting in ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) on 12-14 Oct 2015 to explore to the new challenges and opportunities for EO research created by the rapid advances in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). This includes open tools and software, data-intensive science, virtual research environment, citizen science and crowdsourcing, advanced visualization, e-learning and education of the new generation of Data scientists.

We will demonstrate a working prototype of a fully automatic archiving, processing and distribution rolling archive infrastructure, which downloads the data from the Hub, performs basic processing and makes it available in full resolution over the web-based GIS client, WMS service or specialized APIs, capable of streaming raw data, statistics, time-lapse and similar services. On-the-fly processing and visualization of satellite data makes it possible to not only show true and false color images but also vegetation indices and similar analyses based on different sensor bands. We are adding automatic land use classification, crop mask and crop state, drought and flood identification and similar products as well. All of these services can either be used in 3rd party tools or within our cloud GIS, Geopedia, which makes it possible to analyze the data in combination with other alpha-numeric or spatial datasets.
